Driver pulled from mangled pickup truck after Thurston County wreck
Lacey firefighters saved a driver from a wreck and extinguished a house fire during a busy Thursday.
Lacey Fire District 3 responded to the wreck at about 6:30 a.m. in the 9300 block of Orion Drive Northeast, Todd Carson, Deputy Chief of Operations, told the Olympian Friday.
Fire crews found a mangled Ford F-150 pick-up truck perpendicular to the rear axles of a commercial, 18-wheel truck.
“There was significant damage to the F-150,” Carson said. “The engine compartment basically intruded into the driver’s compartment, so the patient needed to be extricated by jaws of life.”
The agency shared an image of fire crews working on the pick-up truck in a Friday morning Facebook post. Multiple engines responded, and crews conducted a “difficult extraction,” the post states.
“The good part about this story is that there were only minor injuries,” Carson said. “As the picture shows, there was significant damage. It’s surprising they only had minor injuries.”
The outcome shows the importance of using a seatbelt, modern vehicle safety systems and rapid emergency response, the post says.
Carson said he did not know what caused the wreck. The Olympian has asked the Lacey Police Department if it’s investigating the crash.
Later in the afternoon, fire crews extinguished a house fire in Lacey after neighbors quickly called 911.
Multiple neighbors told dispatch that they saw heavy smoke coming from the residence in the 1600 block of 17th Court Southeast, according to a Lacey Fire District 3 Facebook post.
Fire crews responded around 3 p.m. and found a kitchen fire that had spread into the living room, Carson said. Crews quickly put out the blaze, searched the home for occupants, and protected what property they could, the post states. No one was inside the home, and no firefighters were injured, Carson added.
“The fast actions of neighbors calling 911 and the quick response from crews helped keep this incident from becoming much worse,” the post states. “Thank you to everyone who acted quickly and helped look out for one another.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Carson said. The damage was mostly contained to the kitchen, and no other structures were threatened, he said.
The residents of the home were assisted by support services Thursday night, the post reads.
