Olympia crisis unit negotiates with man on Cooper Point Road, police say

A man was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital Monday afternoon for a mental health evaluation and treatment after he allegedly threatened to jump from a west Olympia bridge, a spokesman for the department said.

The Olympia Police Department’s crisis response unit negotiated with the man from Sunday evening to about 1 p.m. Monday, Lt. Paul Lower said.

About 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police and the crisis response unit were dispatched to the bridge that crosses Percival Creek between the Olympia Auto Mall and Evergreen Park Drive.

Cooper Point Road travels across that bridge.

A lane across the bridge was closed Sunday, but Lt. Paul Lower was unsure if that was still the case Monday morning.

Lower later added that lanes of traffic were reopened about 8 a.m. Monday because negotiators were in a confined area that allowed traffic to pass.
