Fatal vehicle crash into building closes roads in Thurston County, police say
One person has died and several people were hurt after the driver of a pick-up truck crashed into multiple vehicles and an apartment building at a busy corner in the city Wednesday afternoon, the Lacey Police Department announced.
About 3:30 p.m., police were dispatched to the Reserve at Lacey, a 55-and-older apartment building at the corner of Pacific Avenue Southeast and Carpenter Road Southeast, the department said in a news release.
The driver allegedly struck four vehicles, the apartment building and pedestrians, one of whom died at the scene. The Thurston County Coroner said the person who died was a woman in her 60s.
“Life-saving measures were attempted by the Lacey Fire Department on the unresponsive pedestrian; however, they were unsuccessful, and the patient was pronounced deceased,” the police news release reads. “A Lacey Fire Chaplain responded to the scene, and the Thurston County Coroner’s Office was contacted.”
There were other injuries, according to police.
“The middle-aged causing driver was transported via ambulance to Providence St. Peter Hospital (in Olympia) for his injuries, a second vehicle occupant sustained minor injuries, and another pedestrian sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. Peter Hospital,” the release reads.
Lacey’s major collision team is investigating, and area roads have been closed.
“We are on scene of a fatality multi-vehicle and building collision,” Lacey police posted on social media at 4:50 p.m. “Pacific Ave between Carpenter RD SE & Homann DR SE is currently shut down, likely for a while. Please use alternate routes and avoid the area while we investigate this tragedy.”
The city of Lacey also posted about the wreck on social media.
“Due to a fatality accident, Pacific Ave - between the Lacey Blvd/Pacific Ave roundabout and Carpenter Rd. - is CLOSED until further notice while they investigate,” the city posted at 4:42 p.m. “Please avoid the area if possible.”
Todd Carson, deputy chief of operations for Lacey Fire District 3, told The Olympian that one vehicle crashed into the apartment building, and another vehicle hit a nearby light pole. He said the fire department sent a battalion unit, three engines, a truck and two medic units to the scene.
