Pedestrian hit by bus in Thurston County was airlifted to Harborview, police say

A 28-year-old man was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Friday morning after he was hit by an Intercity Transit bus in Tumwater, police say.

About 10:30 a.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of Capitol Boulevard South and Linwood Avenue Southwest, Lt. Jen Kolb said.

Police arrived to find the man in the bicycle lane, she said.

“He had suffered multiple injuries and was conscious, but had difficulty communicating, so police provided medical attention until medical personnel arrived on scene,” Kolb said in an email.

Police interviewed witnesses and reviewed video from the bus and learned the following:

The man was standing on a sidewalk in the area while the bus was headed south, Kolb said.

“As the bus was passing the pedestrian, the man was waving his arms at the bus and he (allegedly) leapt in front of the bus and struck the windshield,” Kolb said in her email.

She said it was unclear why he had leapt in front of the bus.

”The bus came to an immediate stop and the pedestrian crawled to the bicycle lane where he was immediately tended to by a witness until law enforcement arrived and took over,” she wrote.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office collision investigation team responded to assist the investigation. The man was ultimately transported to Olympia Regional Airport by the Tumwater Fire Department, then flown to Harborview.

Kolb didn’t know the current status of the patient, but follow up with him is planned she said.
