Hi Olympia! My name is Anna Hull and I will be The Olympian’s intern for the summer. I have an immense respect for local news ecosystems, and I cannot wait to learn more about Thurston County.

I am preparing to enter my fourth year at the University of Washington in Seattle, but I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I discovered my passion for community-focused reporting and storytelling at UW’s student newspaper The Daily, where I have covered topics including crime in the blocks around campus, changes in local businesses, Nobel prize-winning faculty members and student engagement with city elections.

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in journalism after covering campus protests. Some gatherings featured signs criticizing university administrators, while others seemed microcosmic to national conversations. The issues that brought organizers together ranged across topics and the political spectrum, but I repeatedly witnessed the same power and connection that comes when communities use their voices.

As my peers marched outside of libraries and hoisted megaphones from benches, I stood nearby recording chants and writing notes. I learned how truthful, balance, and diligent reporting can unpack discourse and foster dialogue, even serving as a time capsule for periods of critical debate.

I took a brief break from journalism in 2025 to conduct research in Rome, focusing on the experiences of disabled and aging populations in Italy that culminated in a presentation to a United Nations evaluator. My work as a journalist informed my research – conversations with Italian policy experts, interviews with citizen stakeholders, and recorded site visits strengthened the report.

Before coming to The Olympian, I served a one-year tenure as The Daily’s news editor, where I managed a staff of more than 60 student reporters and fostered a community in the newsroom that shaped my college career.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn about Olympia through the eyes of its community. Please send any story tips to anna.hull@theolympian.com, and I’ll see you around town.
