Olympia area under heat advisory as area temps climb 15 degrees above average
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Olympia area until 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 23.
The high temperatures will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for sensitive individuals, especially those lacking effective cooling or hydration.
Temperatures are soaring throughout the Olympia area, with highs expected to reach the upper 80s on Monday, along with lower 80s to lower 90s on Tuesday. Low temperatures in the 50s and lower 60s will come Tuesday morning.
This week usually sees temperatures around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, making this year a 15-degree jump from expected summer conditions.
While Wednesday will still reach the 80s, the area will no longer measure a heat advisory, and onshore winds will bring cooler temperatures in the 70s on Thursday.
The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioning, stay out of the sun and check on neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
Those working or spending time outside should take extra precautions, according to the National Weather Service, and should try to reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when possible.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. If someone seems to be experiencing heat stroke, dial 911.
For those living without shelter, the heat advisory brings heightened risk.
Thurston County Public Health and Social Services increased shelter-in-place efforts this week, with Olympia Mutual Aid Partners distributing survival supplies to individuals and families living outside.
