20-year-old detained after Capitol Forest BB gun shooting, Sheriff’s Office says

A 20-year-old man was detained Friday evening in the area of Capitol Forest after he allegedly fired his BB-gun at what he thought was an abandoned car.

The only problem? It wasn’t an abandoned vehicle, and someone was inside of it, a spokesman for the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

About 5:40 p.m. June 19, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Capitol Forest after an initial 911 report about a man allegedly firing his 22-caliber gun at the vehicle, Lt. Cameron Simper said.

Based on that information, deputies located the man’s vehicle and made what Simper called a “high risk” traffic stop in the 11000 block of Waddell Creek Road Southwest.

The deputy who made the stop waited for another deputy to show up, and then they questioned the man and found the BB-gun. The 20-year-old was cooperative, Simper said. No one was injured, he said.

The man allegedly fired at the vehicle in the C-4000, C-4200 area of Capitol Forest, according to Simper.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the 20-year-old will face charges because that’s up to the state Department of Natural Resources, Simper said.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office assisted DNR, which is the primary agency for the incident, he said.
