Lacey sign honoring dead brothers has been recovered after theft, police say

The memorial sign honoring the two teenage brothers killed in November’s drive-by shooting was stolen earlier this week, but recovered Thursday morning, according to Lacey police.

The sign was found in a ditch a few blocks from 24th Avenue Southeast and College Street Southeast. That’s where the sign was installed and where the Borgen brothers were killed.

The sign’s concrete base was intact and police found a shovel nearby, which they believe to be related to the incident, according to a news release.

Police say the sign was dug up between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. The investigation is ongoing and police are canvassing the nearby neighborhood for video.

The sign was unveiled just last week, where dozens of community members gathered to mourn Alexander Borgen and Deven Borgen. Local non-profit, the Orion Watch Community Outreach Program, fundraised for the sign’s installation.

Lacey Sgt. Derek Thompson said the sign was turned over to Lacey Public Works on Thursday after it was recovered, with plans to reinstall the sign the same day.
