Disorderly woman prompts five 911 calls in Bigelow neighborhood, police say

A 34-year-old woman, possibly suffering from poor mental health, was subdued by Olympia police last week after a disorderly incident in the city’s Bigelow Neighborhood, police said.

About 7:15 p.m. June 22, police received five 911 calls about a woman allegedly throwing garbage cans across the street in the 1300 block of Thurston Avenue Northeast, Lt. Paul Lower said Tuesday.

When neighbors emerged to help the woman, she allegedly shoved one of them, Lower said.

Police and the department’s Community Response Unit (CRU) responded to the scene, he said.

CRU members initially tried to de-escalate the situation, but finding the woman’s words and actions aggressive, police moved in, Lower said.

She continued to throw materials into the street and made verbal threats to officers and neighbors, he said.

The woman allegedly rushed at a police car and two officers tried to subdue her. She tried to bite one officer and grab the equipment off another officer and use it against that officer, Lower said.

She was eventually taken into custody and transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia for a mental health evaluation, he said.

Police referred the matter to the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to consider charges for: disorderly conduct, the alleged assault on the neighbor and the attempted assault on the officers, Lower said.
