Top stories from last week once again included two related to a recent Thurston County prosecutor’s decision not to charge a white police officer in the shooting of two black men.
1. About 100 demonstrate against Nazis, police in downtown Olympia: Many in the crowd wore black and had bandannas covering their faces. A few were carrying bats. They passed out fliers saying they were there to counter a Nazi gathering that had been called for Saturday night in Olympia.
2. Thurston County Sheriff’s Office looking for man who hit woman with baseball bat: The Olympia woman, thought to be in her late 20s or early 30s, was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital with about a 2.5-inch gash in her head, Sgt. Cameron Simper said.
3. Alert issued for missing Thurston County woman: Update: Thurston County sheriff’s deputies verified on Thursday that Troutfree was safe at the home of friends after they saw reports of her disappearance and called authorities.
4. Olympia police seek men who beat pilot with baseball bat during protest: Police say the motorcyclist, who is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, was stopped in traffic on his motorcycle while protesters marched in the streets. Protesters saw two Confederate flags on his motorcycle and surrounded the victim, police say.
5. Hobby Lobby opens in Olympia with prayer and ribbon cutting: The 55,000-square-foot retail store is in the former Kmart building at 4141 Martin Way E., where Martin intersects with Sleater-Kinney Road. It features more than 70,000 crafting and home décor products in its store, from scrapbook supplies and jewelry-making items to custom frames and fabric, according to a news release.
