An Apple Affair, which allows visitors to taste and buy rare apple varieties, returns to the Steamboat Island area this weekend.

The event is noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Rignall Hall, 8131 Urquhart Road NW, Olympia.

Locally, the event is organized by Madrona Grove Fruit Stand and Building Earth Farm, but the apples come from longtime Wenatchee Valley orchardist Jack Feil.

At the 2012 apple gala, visitors could taste and buy varieties including Maigold from Switzerland, Northern Spy from New York; Shizuka from Japan, Ambrosia from southern British Columbia; the Kandil Sinap from Turkey; and the Calville Blanc d’Hiver from Normandy, France.

Apple inventory will be limited at the event, but organizers suggest that visitors bring along a box or other container to carry apples home.
