Today (Nov. 11) Veterans Day

Laying of a wreath: The first Veterans Day ceremony of the day — from 8-8:30 a.m. — will take place on the campus grounds near the Capitol Building. It will include the laying of a wreath at the Winged Victory monument, which honors those who served in World War I, and brief remarks by Gov. Jay Inslee.

War Memorial Walk: Steve Pogge, with Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation, will lead a tour from 9:30 a.m.-noon of the seven major war memorials on the Capitol Campus. Learn how each one came into being and some little-known facts about the artists and interpretation behind the pieces. Tour fee is $15. Register by calling 360-753-8380. Location details provided upon registration. Good walking shoes are suggested because the tour covers about a mile.

Victory Farm Veteran and Community pot luck: The Victory Farmers of Garden Raised Bounty (GRuB) is hosting an event to amend the soil, build rows for spring planting, share good food and enjoy the power of service together. All veterans, active duty service members, their families and community members are invited to attend and participate. The event is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Victory Farm, 718 Milas Ave. NE, Olympia. Bring your favorite fall potluck dish to share. We will provide cutlery and plates. Our work will not stop for rain and we will have shelter for our potluck.

Reading of the names: The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Vietnam War Memorial on the Capitol Campus and continues until all names are read. The Sacajawea Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in partnership with United States Department of Defense 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration Committee, is hosting the reading aloud of each of the names of the KIA/MIA appearing on the panels at the Vietnam War Memorial.

Rotunda ceremony: The Thurston County Veterans Council’s annual Veterans Day ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda is 11 a.m.-noon, includes musical performances, and cannon and rifle salutes near the north stairs of the Capitol Building. Parking is free on the Capitol Campus on holidays.

Buffalo Soldiers in America: The Washington State Historical Society, in partnership with the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, will host a presentation about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers in America, particularly in the Northwest. The program is the keynote presentation of a Veterans Day ceremony that runs from 1-3 p.m. at the Washington State History Museum,1911 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. This Veterans Day observance and admission to the Washington State History Museum on Veterans Day are free for all veterans. Admission is $11 for adults, $8 for student and seniors, and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Thursday

“Naturescaping for Water & Wildlife”: 6-9 pm, at the Lacey Community Center, 6729 Pacific Ave. SE. This free class teaches how to turn your yard into a year-round landscape that attracts birds, butterflies and other small animals, while reducing maintenance and using less water. An optional follow-up class in March will review participants’ plans. Free, but registration is required: streamteam.info or 360-867-2167.

Korean-Era Veterans Salute ceremony: America’s Corps is hosting a Korean-Era Veterans Salute ceremony to honor Korean War and Korean War-era veterans at 10 a.m. at Watkins Field. The ceremony is open to the public through the DuPont Gate, Interstate 5 Exit 119, gate opens at 9 a.m. for all non-DOD card holders who want to attend. Events include interactive displays with soldiers and equipment from 7th Infantry Division and 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command. Retired Army Maj. Gen. John Hemphill and Korean Consul General Moon Duk-ho are the guest speakers. Lt. Gen. Stephen Lanza, 1st Corps commanding general, will preside over the salute ceremony. Lacey Lamplighters Lions annual garage sale: The biggest fundraiser of the year is from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Hallen Hall at Sacred Heart Church, 812 Bowker St. SE, Lacey.
