The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Tacoma and Olympia areas, warning residents to expect up to 2 inches of snow through 6 a.m. Monday.

Snow began falling late Sunday morning and continued through the middle of the afternoon.

According to the advisory, the snow may mix with sleet or freezing rain Monday morning, then should transition to rain by Monday afternoon. Some ice could form south and east of Tacoma during the early morning hours Monday, the agency said.

Mostly, the weather service warned of slippery roads during the period of freezing temperatures. Areas of concern include the Interstate 5 corridor along the King and Pierce county line.

“Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities … and use caution while driving,” according to the advisory, which was issued about 2 p.m. Sunday.

While the agency urged caution, many residents seized upon the dusting of snow Sunday as an opportunity for a bit of fun.

In Tacoma, dogs rolled in the snow to the amusement of their owners. Children made snowmen and snow angels where the snow accumulated along city streets.

For those driving, however, the roads could be a different story, local police agencies warned.

“Side streets are pretty slippery. We recommend staying on main roads or not going out unless you need to. Please drive carefully!” urged the Lakewood Police Department on its Twitter account.
