Hands-on cameraless 35mm moviemaking: The workshop is 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Capitol Theater/Olympia Film Society, 206 Fifth Ave. E., Olympia. Registration is $20 at olympiafilmsociety.org/ofs-film-school-35-is-alive, or reserve a spot and pay at the door by emailing devon@olympiafilmsociety.org. No experience necessary, all materials provided (and bring your own to try, too). Ages 8-98 welcome, but younger than 17 must register with an accompanying adult.

Meet the author: Olympia author and biologist Ellen King Rice will discuss “The EvoAngel,” a thriller with deep roots in biological sciences, 7:30-9 p.m. at the Olympia Timberland Library. 313 Eighth Ave. SE. Free. Information: 360-352-0595.

Welcome to Night Vale: The pop culture phenomenon started in 2012 as a podcast and morphed into a YouTube channel, a Twitter site, interactive live shows, an online store and a novel. From 7-9 p.m. Night Vale will occupy the Lacey Timberland Library. Guests are encouraged to wear Night Vale attire. This free event is suggested for teens and adults with an affinity for the absurd and creepy. The event will also include a poetry contest. Prizes for poetry and costumes. Bunco Party: Fundraiser for the Salvation Army will kick off at 2 p.m. at Affinity of Olympia, 4701 Seventh Ave. SW. Cost is a $20 donation. Information: 360-866-3686.

Science Cafe: A New Look at the Mima Mounds: This study started as an idea for an undergraduate geographic information system lab to see if tools designed for hydrology analysis could classify the Mima mounds. High-resolution elevation data made this possible and more than 27,000 mounds in five different prairies in southern Thurston County were identified. Lacey Parent Cooperative Preschool open house: Teachers and parent volunteers will be on hand from 10 a.m.-noon, to answer questions and give tours of the preschool classrooms.
