In case you missed it...
A late-in-the-week story about a pedestrian being struck by an Amtrak train quickly became our most read.
1. Pedestrian struck by Amtrak train near Tenino: This is the third death on a BNSF line in Washington this year. Last year, a record 27 people died on BNSF lines statewide.
2. Restaurant inspections for Feb. 24: “Improper handwashing observed — employee washed hands at food prep sink without soap.”
3. Proposed 6-story Columbia Place gains momentum in downtown Olympia: Monday’s hearing marked the third time Columbia Place’s site plan has been reviewed by a hearing examiner. Although his official decision will be released in the coming weeks, hearing examiner Mark Scheibmeir said he felt bound to the past two decisions to approve the project.
4. Police shoot, kill homicide suspect on Interstate 5 in Lakewood: A high-speed chase on Interstate 5 early Saturday morning ended with 12 police officers opening fire on a homicide suspect near Tillicum, a Lakewood police spokesman said.
5. Transient accused of injuring Olympia police officer during arrest: One officer “delivered a knee strike to the meaty part of Chacon’s right outer thigh” in an attempt to move him. As the officer prepared to deliver another “knee strike,” Chacon kneed the officer on the inside edge of his right knee. The blow dislocated the officer’s knee, which was locked at a 90-degree angle, according to documents.
