Rainier Road crash fatality identified as Roy man

A contract mail carrier died early Monday when his vehicle left Rainier Road and hit a tree.

Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies and rescue crews were dispatched to Rainier Road and Fir Tree Road in Olympia at 3:51 a.m. and found Clinton Derefield, 55, of Roy, dead.

Derefield died of blunt force trauma, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said Tuesday. Warnock said the cause of the crash is under investigation.

No other vehicles were involved and there was only one person in the vehicle, said Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Rudloff.
