Bail was set at $10,000 for a Lacey man accused of causing a crash that injured four people, including two young children.

Cyle Derek Thompson, 25, appeared Monday in Thurston County Superior Court on one count of vehicular assault. Arraignment was set for April 26.

The crash took place about 5 p.m. Saturday on Sleater-Kinney Road Southeast. Thompson was the driver of a 1990s model Honda Civic that apparently failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was hit by another vehicle.

According to police reports, Thompson was driving northbound on Sleater-Kinney when he turned left to take the southbound I-5 on-ramp and was struck by a Dodge Journey SUV.

Thompson had two children in his car, which was completely smashed in on the passenger side. A 5-year-old girl was flown to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, where she remains in stable but critical condition at press time, said Olympia Police Lt. Paul Lower.

According to court documents, the girl suffered an open skull fracture and an exploded pupil. She has been experiencing seizures and is in intensive care.

The other child, a 3-year-old boy, was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital. According to court documents, the boy was treated for abrasions and was released from the emergency room to family members.

The two adult females in the Dodge SUV were from Grays Harbor County. They suffered minor injuries and were transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital for treatment, according to police.

According to court documents, police obtained a blood sample from Thompson as well as a search warrant for his vehicle. Inside the vehicle, police found marijuana and related paraphernalia. A glass bong was found inside a nylon bag filled with baby diapers.

At the scene, Thompson denied he had smoked marijuana or consumed alcohol prior to the collision, according to court documents. Officers report that the vehicle was filled with personal items, garbage and glass debris.
