What’s Happening for May 12

Standing out in their vibrant yellow colors a row of balsamorhiza sunflowers or more commonly known as balsamroot, are tagged by AmeriCorps' member Iris Banks May 10 at the Violet Prairie Seed Farm. Located at 17843 Gibson Road near Tenino the farm will take part in the 21st annual Prairie Appreciation Days on Saturday May 14. The event includes activities and tours. Locations include the Glacial Heritage Preserve, Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve and seed farm open house tours at Violet Prairie from 12:30-2 p.m. and from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Shotwell's Landing Nursery and Seed Center located at 14447 Littlerock Road near Rochester.Further information can be found on the web at www.prairieappreciationday.org

Civil War letters: Author Nick K. Adams will read from David Brainard Griffin’s Civil War letters at the Lacey Timberland Library, 500 College St. SE, 4-5:30 p.m. Adams, Griffin’s great-great-grandson, has compiled the letters into a new book, “My Dear Wife and Children: Civil War Letters from a 2nd Minnesota Volunteer.” Free. Bear Camp: Northwest Trek visitors will learn about black and grizzly bears, watch black bears in a mock campsite and other activities. Free with membership or admission. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Northwest Trek is also open 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Information: nwtrek.org

Little Red Schoolhouse Barbeque: The fundraiser is 4-7 p.m. at the Olympia Lacey Church of God, 5005 Lacey Blvd., Lacey. The money provides students with school supplies, backpacks and clothing. Eat in or take out, $10. There will be live music, desserts for sale and raffle items. Tickets at redschool.org, the Olympia Lacey Church of God or at the door.
