Standing out in their vibrant yellow colors a row of balsamorhiza sunflowers or more commonly known as balsamroot, are tagged by AmeriCorps' member Iris Banks May 10 at the Violet Prairie Seed Farm. Located at 17843 Gibson Road near Tenino the farm will take part in the 21st annual Prairie Appreciation Days on Saturday May 14. The event includes activities and tours. Locations include the Glacial Heritage Preserve, Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve and seed farm open house tours at Violet Prairie from 12:30-2 p.m. and from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Shotwell's Landing Nursery and Seed Center located at 14447 Littlerock Road near Rochester.Further information can be found on the web at www.prairieappreciationday.org.

Prairie Appreciation Day: A celebration of spring on the prairie is planned 10 a.m.-3 p.m.at Glacial Heritage Preserve and Mima Mounds with several trail walks and a hayride. Bring a lunch. Hawaiian dinner fundraiser: A meal and entertainment benefits Luau for Lupus and Rebuilding Together Thurston County. Hawaiian dinner begins at 7 p.m. at the Olympia Eagles Club, 805 Fourth Ave. Enjoy live music by Whoa Dizzy and a silent auction. Cost is $10 at the door. Information: 360-357-3722 after 4 p.m.

Book reading: Author/illustrator Nikki McClure will read aloud her new picture book, “Waiting for High Tide,” and members of the South Sound Estuary Association will present a “show and tell” about animal life in the South Salish Sea. 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Olympia Timberland Library, 313 Eighth Ave. SE. Bear Camp: Northwest Trek visitors will learn about black and grizzly bears, watch black bears in a mock campsite and other activities. Free with membership or admission. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Northwest Trek is also open 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Information: nwtrek.org.

The Olympia Symphony Orchestra: Making Music for 64 Years: Beginning at 7 p.m., at the State Capital Museum, 211 21st Ave. SE, the Olympia Symphony Orchestra’s conductor and music director, Hew Edwards, will speak about the history of the orchestra, music appreciation and the special 10th anniversary concert at the Capitol on July 31, 2016. Suggested donation $2.

Little Red Schoolhouse Barbeque: The fundraiser is 4-7 p.m., at the Olympia Lacey Church of God, 5005 Lacey Blvd., Lacey. The money provides students with school supplies, backpacks, and clothing. Eat in or take out, $10. There will be live music, desserts for sale, and raffle items. Tickets are can be purchased at redschool.org, the Olympia Lacey Church of God, or at the door. A $14 donation will purchase a backpack, school supplies, socks and underwear for one child. Donations may be sent to P.O. Box 6302, Olympia, WA 98507.

History Happy Hour: Do you know what a Wobblie is? Are you familiar with the lyrics to Pete Seeger songs? Do you like drinking beer? Join the Washington State Archives gang for a spirited round of pub trivia at Three Magnets in the Barrel Room. This round’s theme is Washington labor history. Three Magnets in the Barrel Room is at 600 Franklin Street SE, Ste 105 in downtown Olympia.
