About 10,000 vehicles a day will be affected by a summer resurfacing project on Old Highway 99.

The project will repair about 6 miles of Old Highway 99 from the Thurston-Lewis County line to Tenino by grinding and repaving the degraded asphalt. After paving is completed, new traffic markings and striping will be added.

The road will remain open during working hours, but will be reduced to one lane. Drivers will be directed through the use of signs, flaggers, traffic control devices and portable message boards.

The project is scheduled to start in late May and could be completed by August. Work will be conducted during daylight hours Monday through Friday.

Thurston County commissioners approved a contract for just under $2.1 million with Lakeside Industries Inc. of Centralia. The engineer’s estimate for the project was more than $2.7 million.

The ashphalt grindings will be stockpiled for future road maintenance by the county.
