Thursday night hit-and-run in Olympia sends 1 to hospital, 1 to jail

A 36-year-old Olympia man was booked into jail Thursday night after he fled from the scene of a crash he caused while speeding on Pacific Avenue, Olympia police say.

Witnesses estimated the man was driving east at between 40 and 50 miles per hour on Pacific and weaving in and out of traffic before he lost control, hit a curb, and spun into oncoming lanes, Lt. Paul Lower told The Olympian.

The man’s car collided with a westbound vehicle and with a retaining wall on the 3400 block of Pacific Avenue, Lower said. He fled the scene on foot.

About 9:20 p.m. Thursday, police arrived at the scene. A witness had followed the suspect and pointed him out to officers who caught up and detained the man, Lower said.

A passenger in the man’s vehicle was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia for a cut to her head and pain in her ribs, stomach, and legs, according to Lower. The person driving the second vehicle had bumps and bruises, but was not taken to the hospital.

The suspect was found to be over the legal limit for alcohol consumption and booked on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in an accident or injury and vehicular assault while driving under the influence.
