Thurston County mother arrested on suspicion of killing infant daughter

A 42-year-old Thurston County woman was arrested Wednesday evening on suspicion of murdering her infant daughter, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Thurston County Sheriff’s detectives were called to a home in the 1800 block of Carpenter Road Southeast near Lacey Jan. 28 when the woman reported finding her 3-month-old daughter deceased in bed, according to a news release.

The cause of the infant’s death wasn’t immediately determined, but an autopsy by the Thurston County Coroner’s Office later found she had died by homicide. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office believe the baby’s mother caused her daughter’s death.

Lt. Ray Brady said the office is not releasing the specific details of what caused the infant’s death, but that there were “clear signs of homicide present” in the autopsy. Those signs were reviewed twice by a forensic pathologist and by a medical doctor, Brady said.

The mother had a meeting with the Coroner’s Office Wednesday, and Sheriff’s detectives interviewed her there afterward before taking her into custody.

The woman was booked into Thurston County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The Olympian does not identify suspects by name before they appear in court.
