Teen shot near Percival Landing in downtown Olympia Friday afternoon
A 16-year-old boy was in critical condition Friday afternoon after he was shot in the leg near Percival Landing, according to the Olympia Police Department.
The boy was the only victim in the shooting and police believe the parties involved knew each other, Lt. Paul Lower told The Olympian. The suspected shooter also is a “young male,” Lower said.
The shooting was reported just after 4 p.m. Friday, according to Thurston County 911 dispatch.
When The Olympian was at the scene about 4:30 p.m., Olympia police were marking off a parking lot adjacent to the waterfront park with crime scene tape.
Based on witness accounts, police believe the suspect and victim met in the parking lot to “arrange a purchase.” When the suspect tried to take the victim’s money without giving him the “product” in exchange, a struggle ensued, according to Lower.
Police believe the suspect then pulled out a handgun, shot the victim, and fled the scene.
The boy had a gunshot wound to his right leg and a fire medic unit took him to Providence St. Peter Hospital, according to Mike Buchanan, Assistant Chief of Operations at Olympia Fire Department.
Lower said detectives were interviewing multiple witnesses.
“We have some good leads to follow up on, and we’ll be at this for quite some time tonight,” he said Friday afternoon.
