Yelm woman injured in crash, boyfriend arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault

A 33-year-old Yelm woman was seriously injured Wednesday night when her boyfriend crashed her SUV while driving at high speeds near Old Highway 99, Thurston County Sheriff’s Office says.

Her 36-year-old boyfriend, also from Yelm, fled the vehicle and was later booked into jail on suspicion of vehicular assault, hit-and-run, and other charges.

About 9:45 p.m. Wednesday night, the man was driving his girlfriend’s Dodge SUV at high speeds east on 93rd Avenue Southeast. Investigators’ preliminary estimates of his speed are upward of 100 miles per hour in a zone where the speed limit is half that, Lt. Ray Brady told The Olympian.

The SUV hit two light poles on 93rd Avenue before crossing Old Highway 99 and landing in a ditch on the road’s east side, Brady said. Law enforcement arrived to find “a couple hundred feet of skid marks.”

The man’s girlfriend was still in the passenger seat when deputies arrived and had sustained possible broken bones, Brady said. Medics transported her to a hospital.

Deputies found the man at a nearby house and arrested him on suspicion of vehicular assault, hit-and-run, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
