Police ask for help solving Yelm hit-and-run that severely injured 12-year-old boy
Crime Stoppers of the South Sound and the Yelm Police Department want the public’s help solving a hit-and-run that severely injured a 12-year-old boy near the end of May, according to Det. Bill DeVore and a recent “Crime of the Week” news release.
Just after midnight on May 24 on Mountain View Road Northwest in Yelm, a vehicle hit the boy then fled the scene. He landed about 5 feet off the roadway, DeVore, who’s investigating the case, told The Olympian.
The boy’s friend, who’s 12 years old and from the Olympia area, ran to the victim’s parents’ house for help then came back, DeVore said. A parent called 911, according to DeVore, and the injured boy was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia by ambulance and subsequently transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Based on a description given by the boy’s friend and debris found at the scene, police believe the vehicle is a white or silver Ford F250 or F350 pickup from the years 2017-2020 with a silver toolbox in its bed and the mirror on its passenger side either missing or recently replaced.
The boy’s friend reported seeing the same pickup drive by again, toward Yelm Avenue, after the collision.
Police have looked for video surveillance footage at nearby businesses, according to DeVore, but haven’t yet found anything usable.
Anyone with information — specifically, anyone who knows someone with a vehicle matching the above description — is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or to submit a tip from a smartphone through the P3 mobile application.
