Man arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault after crash north of Olympia

A 35-year-old man from the Olympia area was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of vehicular assault and other charges after a car crash just south of Boston Harbor that left a woman seriously injured, the Sheriff’s Office says.

A Sheriff’s deputy was driving southbound near Shincke Road Northeast in the early morning hours Thursday, Lt. Ray Brady told The Olympian, when a black, 2002 Mercedes Benz 320 series passed him northbound at a high rate of speed.

By the time the deputy turned around his vehicle, he reported the car was almost out of sight and had accelerated, Brady said.

The deputy was searching for the car when the Sheriff’s Office started receiving reports of a crash in the area of Woodard Bay Road Northeast and Boston Harbor Road Northeast, Brady said.

A deputy and sergeant arrived at the scene and couldn’t see the vehicle from the roadway, according to Brady, but heard a woman yelling for help and found the heavily damaged vehicle in a wooded area off the road. It had also struck two parked cars, Brady said.

A 31-year-old woman from the Lacey area was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia via ambulance. She was confirmed to have a broken leg and suffered other serious injuries, according to Brady.

The driver had run from the vehicle and was hiding in nearby brush, where a K9 unit found him, Brady said. He was also taken to the hospital, for a blood draw based on a search warrant.

Deputies found heroin and a scale near where they found the driver, Brady said and a jar containing marijuana in the car.

Arrest records show the man was booked into Thurston County jail just after 2 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of vehicular assault, unlawful imprisonment domestic violence, and unlawful possession of heroin.

South Bay Fire Department also responded to the scene, Brady said.

The Olympian does not typically name defendants before they appear in court.
