UPDATE: Man wielding a knife dies after being shot by Olympia police during arrest attempt Monday
A man has died at an area hospital after he pulled a knife on Olympia police officers and an officer shot him.
Tumwater Police spokeswoman Laura Wohl confirmed earlier information that police were called at 10:15 a.m. Monday to reports of a disorderly man near Sleater Kinney Road Northeast and Martin Way East in Olympia.
Wohl said the man had refused to pay for items at a gas station then went on to cause a scene at a neighboring Starbucks. She said employees from both stores called police.
When officers arrived, Wohl said they got the man to leave Starbucks, but he then went into the middle of Martin Way. Police were able to talk him out of the road, but Wohl said he had become irate at that point. While officers were attempting to talk to him, he came at them with a knife. Wohl said it’s believed one police officer fired his handgun, striking the man.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. The officers were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Wohl is the lead communications person for the investigation into the incident, which is being conducted by Capital Metro Independent Investigations Team.
