A 25-year-old Olympia man may face charges after a two-vehicle collision Wednesday on Interstate 5 in Cowlitz County.

The collision injured two people, the Olympia man and his passenger, and totaled two cars. It occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on I-5 near the Toutle River, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.

The Olympia man drove a Kia Forte south on the highway behind a Toyota Corolla carrying two people, according to the WSP memo. The Olympia driver reportedly struck the Corolla, then his vehicle veered into the tree line on the right and struck a deer and a tree.

A 30-year-old Edgewood woman was a passenger in the Olympia man’s Forte. Both wore seatbelts but were transported to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview with injuries, according to the memo.

State Patrol believes drugs or alcohol were involved. However, investigators were still determining the cause of the collision when the memo was released.

Two people in the Corolla from Seattle, a 58-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, wore seatbelts and were not injured, the memo says.

The Seattle woman initially called dispatch to report the collision, the memo says.
