Olympia police arrested a 26-year-old man early Thursday morning after he allegedly collided with a bicyclist near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Pacific Avenue.
Lt. Paul Lower said three bicyclists were riding east on Fourth Avenue at about 1 a.m. when one of them was struck by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene in the vehicle.
The two men who had been riding with the victim screamed for help, and a nearby police officer heard them. He called for backup to help the injured man, then followed the suspect.
He found the suspect near the 3000 block of Pacific Avenue. The man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular assault, Lower said. He was booked into Thurston County Jail.
The victim was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital, where he was in serious condition Thursday.
