Capital High School was recovering Monday after a modified lockout that morning prompted by the discovery of a weapon being passed between stalls in the men’s bathroom, Olympia police said.

Nobody was allowed in or out of the school for almost three hours after the incident was first reported. The school was taken off lock out by early afternoon.

Police Lt. Paul Lower said police were dispatched to the school at at 8:50 a.m., the second time in less than a week officers have been called to the campus for a gun-related incident.

Staff conducted hallway and bathroom checks after a staff member saw the exchange happen. Staff kept an eye on the stalls and called OPD, Lower said.

Officers found a BB gun in the style of a handgun in one of the toilets, and they have detained five students they believe to have been involved in the incident. Lower said nobody was hurt, and it’s believed all parties involved have been detained.

Lower said one student was arrested as of 1 p.m. The 17-year-old male was booked into Thurston County juvenile detention on suspicion of possessing a dangerous weapon on school grounds. The rest of the students were released to their parents.

Last Wednesday, on the first day of school, Capital High School students were locked out because of a student with a loaded handgun, according to Olympia police. After receiving a report about a student on campus with a handgun, Police Lt. Paul Lower said a 15-year-old male student was booked into Thurston County juvenile detention on suspicion of unlawful possession of a gun, possession of a gun on school grounds, and resisting arrest.

Lower said police determined Monday’s incident was not related to the incident from the week prior.

The Olympia School District set up a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, to address student safety and the recent events. You can attend online via Zoom.
