Pursuit ends after driver crashes car at Lacey I-5 exit Saturday morning, Sheriff says

A King County driver crashed their vehicle at an Interstate 5 exit in Lacey early Saturday morning, ending a pursuit that started in Lewis County.

The crash occurred near the end of the College Street exit at milepost 108. Sheriff Derek Sanders shared video of the crash on his Facebook page.

“The suspect hit the berm at high speed and catapulted their vehicle, rolling multiple times before coming to a stop on its side,” Sanders said in a post.

The driver and a passenger reportedly broke out the back window to get out of the vehicle, Sanders said. Neither of them was seriously injured, he added.

A state trooper started pursuing the driver at milepost 77 in Chehalis, Trooper Dakota Russell told The Olympian on Sunday. At the time, the driver was traveling at about 120 miles per hour in a 60 mile per hour zone and failed to stay in their lane of travel.

Thurston County deputies joined the pursuit as the driver passed through Tumwater, Sanders said in his post.

“It was evident the suspect was lost and was trying to get back north as the pursuit got off and back onto the freeway numerous times,” Sanders said.

Russell said Washington State Patrol took custody of the driver after the crash and booked him into the Lewis County jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, eluding law enforcement and other misdemeanors.
