Six people were arrested after a brawl at an Olympia area restaurant early Sunday morning, Thurston County jail and court records show.

About 1:50 a.m., multiple law enforcement agencies, including Olympia and Lacey police, were dispatched to the Sampan Restaurant in the 900 block of Hensley Street Northeast, just north of Martin Way.

One of those arrests included a 23-year-old man who was booked on suspicion of third-degree assault, a felony. Court records for his arrest show what police encountered.

“While arriving, (an Olympia police officer) observed a group of 30-plus subjects still actively verbally and physically fighting in a disturbance with only 4-5 patrol vehicles on scene,” the court records read.

The Olympia officer observed a Lacey police officer trying to detain a woman, according to court records. While the Lacey officer was trying to do that, a man grabbed the officer’s arm as if he was trying to pull the officer away from her. The Olympia officer then moved in to detain that man.

But while doing so, the 23-year-old man charged at him, according to the court records.

“The officer looked up and observed a large male with no shirt charging directly at him while yelling something about his uncle,” the court records read.

The officer tried to create distance from the man, but the suspect closed the distance, calling him derogatory names, clearly wanting to fight, according to court records.

The Olympia officer ultimately deployed his taser twice, which turned out to be largely ineffective against the man, who he estimated at 300 pounds and more than 6 feet tall.

“The man was able to stand back up and sweep the probes out of his body, breaking the lines and ultimately disconnecting him from the probes, now making the taser ineffective for reapplication,” the court records read.

The man charged a second time at the officer before finally being detained.

In addition to the 23-year-old man, five others were arrested, according to jail records.

Four women, ages 25 to 47, were booked on suspicion of fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor. A 26-year-old man also was booked for fourth-degree assault, the jail records show.
