Thurston County deputies injured while fighting man accused of felony harassment
Two Thurston County deputies were injured Tuesday in a fight with a person suspected of harassing a public defense attorney.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. at the person’s home near Johnson Point Road Northeast, Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Brooks said.
Brooks said multiple deputies responded to the home where the fight broke out. Two deputies and the suspect were treated for injuries at an area hospital. All three have since been discharged from the hospital, he said Wednesday morning.
Jail records show deputies booked a 26-year-old man into the county jail Tuesday on suspicion of felony harassment, second-degree assault and third-degree assault.
In a Facebook post, Sheriff Derek Sanders said deputies contacted the man in his driveway as part of an investigation into death threats toward a public defense attorney.
Sanders alleges the person “became combative” and punched a deputy in the face, causing their ear to bleed.
The person also attempted and “nearly succeeded” gouging out the eye of a second deputy, Sanders said. Deputies ultimately apprehended the person and placed him in restraints, he added.
Sanders shared two images of the injured deputies from the hospital. One image showed a profile of a deputy with a bloodied ear. A second image showed a deputy laying down while wearing a dirtied uniform.
“Both deputies are being treated and are in good spirits with command staff, deputies and I at the hospital with them,” Sanders said in his post Tuesday night.
