Lacey police arrested a 53-year-old man accused of kidnapping and assaulting a 20-year-old woman who was selling books door-to-door on Wednesday.

The incident occurred before 11 a.m. at a home on the 8000 block of North Bicentennial Loop Southeast.

Officers initially responded to a different residence on the same block after a resident called 911, according to a Lacey Police Department news release. The resident told dispatch a woman came to their home and said a man was after her. She carried the man’s wallet, which allowed officers to identify and arrest him.

Lacey police say the woman contacted the man at his residence and he expressed interest in buying the books. The man went to retrieve his wallet, but when he came back, the man allegedly grabbed the woman by the hair and pulled her into the home.

The woman said he struck her several times in the head with a hammer and threatened to kill her if she did not stop yelling. The woman said she fought back and kicked the man in the face, causing him to fall backwards.

She then moved to escape, but before she did so, she grabbed the man’s wallet.

“We are very proud of this young lady,” Lacey Detective Sgt. Jeremy Knight said in the news release. “She is a survivor. She met evil head-on, and after being struck several times on the head with a hammer, had the wherewithal to collect his identification on the way out.”

Following the incident, officers obtained a search warrant for the man’s residence. In a Facebook post, the Lacey Police Department said the Thurston County SWAT Team assisted officers in executing the warrant and arresting the man.

The man was booked into the Thurston County jail on suspicion of first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping and felony harassment.

The woman was treated for her injuries at a local hospital, according to the release.
