Olympia police seized a large amount of narcotics and a gun from a stolen car found in west Olympia June 22.

An officer and their trainee sought out the car after receiving an alert from the city’s Flock Safety camera system, the Olympia Police Department shared in a Thursday Facebook post.

The city began using the camera system last year in response to a rise in auto thefts, but it can also be used to solve other crimes. The 24/7 cameras automatically read license plates and log vehicle information, such as make, model and paint color. The city’s transparency portal indicates it uses 15 cameras.

In this case, the officers found the stolen vehicle at a parking lot on the 1300 block of Cooper Point Road, according to court records. When move officers arrived, the post says they “made a coordinated effort to safely recover” the stolen vehicle.

One person associated with the vehicle fled into a nearby business but officers quickly detained them and a second person.

An officer contacted the owner of the vehicle and they gave them permission to search it. Inside, officers allegedly found a stolen firearm, over $7,300 in cash, a large quantity of narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

The narcotics reportedly included fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine and other pills. The drug paraphernalia included scales, packaging materials and other drug distribution tools.

Police shared an image of their haul along with their post. It shows a notebook, scales, cash, handgun, bullets, needles and an assortment of suspected drugs in clear baggies and bottles.

Officers booked the two suspects into the Thurston County jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle. The jail log describes them as a 56-year-old man and a 36-year-old women.

The man and the women each attended their preliminary appearance in Thurston County Superior Court on Monday. Judge John Skinder set bail at $50,000 for each of them.

On Tuesday, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged each of them with four felonies.

  • Count 1: possession of stolen motor vehicle.
  • Count 2: possessing a stolen firearm.
  • Count 3: unlawful possession of a controlled substance, heroin, with intent to deliver while armed with a firearm.
  • Count 4: unlawful possession of a controlled substance, fentanyl, with intent to deliver while armed with a firearm.
