The Olympia Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a man who broke into a woman’s apartment on the city’s west side.

Police Lt. Paul Lower said the man was seen canvassing the apartment complex in the 3200 block of Capital Mall Drive Southwest at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, before finding a unit with a faulty sliding glass door. The woman who reported the burglary awoke to the man standing next to her bed. She shouted at him and he fled the apartment.

Lower said the woman checked on her sleeping children, who were unharmed. The man had stolen money from her wallet, but nothing else.

Security video from apartment neighbors showed the man walking along the complex earlier, trying to enter front doors, sliding glass doors and windows on many units.

The man was described as white, in his 20s or 30s, and 5-foot-10 with a slim build. He was wearing dark pants, a light-colored hoodie sweatshirt, and a balaclava-type head covering with only his eyes showing. He was wearing Adidas-type sneakers with stripes.

Lower said the incident is being investigated by OPD detectives, but anyone who spots or hears something suspicious should call 911. He encouraged people to double check their doors and windows at night, especially in large apartment complexes.
