One hospitalized following Olympia police officer shooting Tuesday
One person was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after being shot by an Olympia police officer in a residential neighborhood on the city’s west side.
The shooting occurred at around 3:15 p.m. at a home on the 3400 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest, near Grass Lake Nature Park, according to a brief Facebook post shared by the Olympia Police Department.
The person who was shot was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Lacey police Sgt. Jeremy Knight said Wednesday morning. He confirmed the Olympia police officer was not hospitalized and there were no fatalities stemming from this incident. He declined to provide further details, pending a formal release process.
In their post, the Olympia Police Department said the officer was responding to a “disturbance” when the shooting occurred.
OPD said it has notified the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations about the shooting and the Capital Metro Independent Investigative Team (CMIIT) is now investigating.
The investigation team is activated when officers are involved in “critical incidents,” according to their website. The team was last called in when an Olympia police officer shot and killed Timothy Green on Aug. 22, 2022.
The team consists of detectives from Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and Yelm police departments. When an incident occurs, the agency directly involved in the shooting abstains from the investigation.
OPD said on Tuesday that more information about the incident would be released on the official CMIIT website. As of Wednesday morning, the website had no additional information about this incident.
Knight, who is listed as the Public Information Officer for this investigation, said more information will be shared soon.
So far, it’s unclear who shot who and under what specific circumstances.
