Investigators share new details about Olympia police officer shooting that hospitalized 1
Investigators have released new details about an Olympia police officer shooting Tuesday that left one man hospitalized.
An Olympia police sergeant shot a 42-year-old man who allegedly broke into his parent’s westside home on Tuesday, according to a news release.
The shooting occurred at 3:32 p.m. at a home on the 3400 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest, near Grass Lake Nature Park.
The Olympia Police Department first informed the public of the shooting in a Tuesday Facebook post, but few details were shared at the time. The Capital Metro Independent Investigation Team, a body comprised of detectives from local cities, is now investigating the shooting and their first news release on the matter was shared late Wednesday.
The release describes the events around the shooting from the perspective of law enforcement. The following is a summary of those events.
Olympia police officers responded to the home at about 3:15 p.m. after a 77-year-old resident called 911, per the release.
The resident told dispatch his adult son broke into their home. Sounds of breaking glass and yelling were heard in the background of the call.
The son later emerged from the home with a “large, edged weapon” in his right hand and “ran at officers in the street.” One of them, the sergeant, shot the son outside the home.
Medics transported the son to a local hospital, and he was later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The release states he was undergoing surgery as of Wednesday and was expected to survive.
No officers were injured during the shooting, according to the release.
Following the shooting, OPD said it notified the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations and called on Capital Metro Independent Investigative Team to investigate.
The investigation team is activated when officers are involved in “critical incidents,” according to their website. The team was last called in when an Olympia police officer shot and killed Timothy Green on Aug. 22, 2022.
The team consists of detectives from Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and Yelm police departments. When an incident occurs, the agency directly involved in the shooting abstains from the investigation.
The Wednesday release states no additional information is available.
Lacey police Sgt. Jeremy Knight, who is listed as the Public Information Officer for this investigation, said he’s unable to share details without going through a formal notification process that involves family and community representatives.
Updates on the investigation will be posted on the Capital Metro Independent Investigative Team website as they are ready, he said.
