Kidnapping on Olympia bus ends with arrest of man in ankle monitor, police say

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree kidnapping and other crimes after he ordered a 17-year-old male with what appeared to be a real gun to walk in his direction, according to Olympia police.

The incident began Monday afternoon on an Intercity Transit bus, Lt. Paul Lower said Tuesday.

The 17-year-old was riding the bus near downtown when the 18-year-old sat next to him and began displaying what appeared to be a real handgun, Lower said.

The suspect then allegedly invited the victim to use marijuana, but the victim refused. The suspect also tried to engage the victim in a conversation about sexual habits, Lower said, and the victim didn’t reply.

The suspect then allegedly removed the gun from a backpack and told the victim he wanted him to get off the bus. Once they got off the bus, the suspect allegedly tried to tell the victim which way to walk.

The 17-year-old ran away and jumped on another bus that took him to the downtown Olympia Intercity Transit station. That’s where he called police, Lower said.

It turned out the 18-year-old man was wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and was located by Tumwater police in the 500 block of Trosper Road Southwest about 4 p.m.

He was booked on suspicion of first-degree kidnapping and felony harassment. He also had some outstanding warrants for his arrest, according to Lower.

The gun was revealed to be a handgun-style BB gun, Lower said.
