Deputies arrest student accused of threatening Tenino High School

Deputies arrested a juvenile Tenino High School student Thursday morning after the student allegedly threatened to bring a gun to school.

The Tenino School District learned about the potential threat Wednesday evening, according to a district Facebook post.

School administration “immediately investigated” in coordination with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and Tenino Police Department, per the post. A student reportedly heard another student say they were going to bring a firearm to the school, Sheriff Derek Sanders shared in his own Facebook post. Deputies reportedly obtained a witness statement and identified the student who allegedly made the threat using school surveillance footage.

“Deputies developed probable cause for threats to injure school property, and the juvenile was placed under arrest prior to the start of school this morning,” Sanders said in his post.

The district said they received notification about the arrest at 6 a.m. Thursday and that there is no ongoing threat to the high school or any district schools. However, the district noted there would be an increased law enforcement presence that morning.

“Thank you to all who are committed to keeping our students and schools safe, including all who reported this threat immediately,” the district post states.

Tenino High School is located at 500 W. Second Ave. in the city of Tenino, which is about 30 minutes south of Olympia.
