A 21-year-old is in jail for suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault after a Friday collision in Lacey killed a man and injured his passenger.

A gray Mazda CX-9 and a black Ford Mustang were traveling southbound on Interstate 5 in the same lane around 11:50 p.m., according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.

The Mustang, which contained a 21-year-old driver and two teenage passengers, struck the rear end of the Mazda at mile point 110.

The collision caused the Mazda to roll onto its passenger side and come to rest in the right shoulder, the memo said.

The victim vehicle’s driver, a 50-year-old man from Oregon, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 20-year-old female passenger sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

None of the occupants in the Mustang sustained injuries, according to the report. Its driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges.

The WSP report indicated the collision’s cause was speeding, and that no drugs or alchohol were involved.

The roadway was blocked for 7 hours and 52 minutes.
