The Mason County Sheriff’s Office found an infant buried in a back yard near Shelton on Tuesday evening, according to a news release.
Deputies found the infant after serving a search warrant at the home. The cause of death is currently unknown, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
Law enforcement began investigating late Monday night after a 17-year-old female was examined at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia for an unknown medical issue. The hospital reported to Olympia police that the female appeared to have given birth sometime in the previous 24 hours, but she denied having been pregnant.
Hospital records show that she visited the hospital on Nov. 4, and was pregnant at the time.
Olympia Police spoke to the teen’s father, who said that his daughter gave birth Monday to a stillborn infant, and he buried the infant in the back yard.
Anyone with knowledge about this incident is encouraged to contact the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and speak with Det. Jeff Rhoades at 360-427-9670, ext. 313.
