Eighth suspect faces charges related to Ruddell Road shooting

An eighth suspect has been charged in connection with the Oct. 21 fatal shooting on Ruddell Road near Lacey.

Carlos V. Gumataotao, 33, of Lacey, appeared before Thurston County Superior Court Judge Anne Hirsch on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to two counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. According to court documents, Gumataotao allegedly sold marijuana to Alex Thomas-Anderson, 19, who was shot and killed.

Gumataotao was arrested in late November, and later released on his own recognizance.

The other suspects arrested in the case are:

▪ Dallas D. Martin, 17, of Fredrickson, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, first-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm.

▪ Andre D. Wiley, 21, of Thurston County, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, and first-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon.

▪ Devion D. Hammond, 19, of Tacoma, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, and rendering criminal assistance.

▪ Charles J. Tate, 27, of Thurston County, is charged with first-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver while armed with a deadly weapon.

▪ Mateo A. Q. Rodriguez, 18, of Lake Stevens, is charged with second-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver while armed with a deadly weapon.

▪ Tyler N. Bremer, 26, of Elma, is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver while armed with a deadly weapon.

▪ Briana R. Martin, 20, of Tacoma, is charged with first-degree rendering criminal assistance.

Thurston County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunshots at a house in the 6100 block of Ruddell Road at 8:55 p.m. Oct. 21. A man, later identified as Thomas-Anderson, died at the scene.

Olympia police officers responded to Providence St. Peter Hospital after two men arrived with gunshot wounds. Those men were identified as Dallas Martin and Wiley.

Detectives say Martin and Wiley had arranged to purchase marijuana from Rodriguez and another man at the Ruddell Road home. The suspects argued about weapons and money.

Deputies say a video from an in-home surveillance system shows that Wiley ran across the room and held a gun against Bremer’s head. Bremer took out his own gun and possibly fired at Wiley.

The video shows Martin aiming his gun and possibly firing shots at Bremer.

Thomas-Anderson and Bremer had been sitting side-by-side on the couch. The video shows Thomas-Anderson being shot in the abdomen. Detectives reported that Thomas-Anderson likely hadn’t been involved in the drug transaction, and was probably shot by mistake.

Deputies say Hammond, who had remained in the car during the shooting, drove Martin and Wiley to the hospital before deputies arrived. After dropping off Martin and Wiley, he told deputies he gave a bag containing money and one of the guns to Briana Martin, who met him at the hospital.

Detectives later learned that Thomas-Anderson and another man had likely been at the Ruddell Road house to purchase marijuana from Gumataotao. Surveillance footage from the home shows the men exchanging money for a small item. After the shooting, Gumataotao fled from the house, the footage shows.
