Two men injured in Yelm Highway shooting

Two men were injured in a Saturday morning shooting on the 12700 block of the Yelm Highway, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

One of the men will be booked into the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder once he is released from the hospital.

Deputies responded to the home at about 7:30 a.m. after a Nisqually tribal officer reported the shooting. The two men were initially taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital, then transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident began when two bail enforcement agents — employed by a private company — and the Nisqually officer went to the home to arrest a suspect on a Thurston County Superior Court warrant for first-degree burglary, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect exited the home, armed with a pistol. The agents told the suspect multiple times to put down the weapon, but he didn’t comply. One of the agents fired a stun gun at the suspect, but the prongs didn’t hit him.

The suspect fired at the other agent, hitting him several times, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The first agent took out a gun, and shot the suspect twice after a brief chase.

The Nisqually officer didn’t participate in the shooting and was out of sight of the scene. He immediately radioed dispatch to report that shots had been fired.

When Thurston County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrived at the scene, they learned that C-4 explosives were being stored in a shop on the property. A Thurston County judge granted a search warrant, and the Washington State Patrol Explosives Unit located about a pound of the explosive, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
