Mercer Island man dies in crash on I-5 in Fife

A 61-year-old Mercer Island man died Friday night after crashing into a barrier on Interstate 5 near mile marker 137 in Fife.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, a 911 caller reported the incident on southbound I-5. The caller said the 2008 Jaguar sedan weaved across multiple lanes of traffic before leaving the road and crashing into a barrier, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill.

The man’s name will be released after next of kin are notified, Gill said. Police don’t know if drugs or alcohol are involved.

This is the first fatal crash on state highways in Pierce and Thurston counties since the New Year, Gill said.
