Trial postponed for one man accused of attacking Olympia officer
The trial has been postponed for Andre Thompson, one of the men accused of attacking an Olympia police officer before the officer shot him May 21.
Thompson, 24, appeared before Thurston County Superior Court Judge Erik Price on Thursday. Deputy Prosecutor Scott Jackson asked the judge to postpone a hearing on whether statements Thompson made to detectives during the investigation will be admissible at trial.
Price granted the request, and postponed the trial until Aug. 10.
Thompson and his brother, Bryson Chaplin, 21, were both scheduled to stand trial beginning April 25. While Thompson’s trial has been postponed, Chaplin’s trial date hadn’t changed as of Thursday afternoon, according to the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office.
The trial had been postponed once before; it was initially slated to take place in December 2015.
Thompson and Chaplin both face second-degree assault charges for the alleged assault of Officer Ryan Donald. Chaplin faces an additional fourth-degree assault charge for allegedly throwing a case of beer at a Safeway employee before the encounter with Donald.
The Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office decided not to file charges against Donald in the May 21 shooting, and an Olympia Police Department internal review found that Donald didn’t violate any department policies.
