Man accused of shooting companion during camping trip on JBLM

A camping trip over the weekend on Joint Base Lewis-McChord ended with a man getting shot, allegedly by another person in the group.

Richard Allen Davis, 25, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to first-degree assault in the shooting, and Court Commissioner Meagan Foley set bail at $100,000.

The man he’s accused of shooting Saturday initially was in critical condition at Madigan Army Medical Center, according to court records. An updated condition for the man wasn’t available Wednesday.

Charging papers give this account of the shooting, which the FBI investigated because it took place on federal land:

Davis organized the trip via Facebook, and, without having a permit, set up camp with three other people in a training area of the base near Roy.

The group drank alcohol, and at one point a boyfriend and girlfriend started arguing. The woman screamed for Davis to keep her boyfriend away from her, and when Davis asked what happened, the boyfriend started walking toward him.

Davis said he told the boyfriend he’d open fire if he didn’t stop, and when the man got within between 5 and 15 feet of Davis, Davis fired his pistol.

A doctor later said the man was hit in the back of the head, right groin, and both biceps.

Davis called 911 after the shooting and waited for officers to arrive.

He said he’d known the man he shot since ninth grade. He said he was fearful of him because he believed he’d been in violent episodes before, and Davis had heard he owned a gun.

A breath test Davis took several hours after the shooting showed his blood alcohol level was 0.075.
