Evergreen faculty member Carri LeRoy receives 2021 Presidential Award
Carri LeRoy, a faculty member at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, has received a 2021 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the college announced.
Established in 1995, the award is one of the highest honors in the nation for science and mathematics teachers, according to the college.
LeRoy began teaching at Evergreen in 2005. She has taught a range of subjects including biology, zoology, natural resource management, mathematics, and ecology.
She also has been the co-director of the Sustainability in Prisons Project at Evergreen from 2011–2017, and since 2015 she has been doing freshwater ecology research trips to Mount St. Helens with groups of students, according to the college.
“I can’t think of a more deserving recipient of this honor than Dr. LeRoy,” said Evergreen’s provost and vice president for academic affairs David McAvity in a statement. “She embodies Evergreen’s commitment to student-centered learning and integrates her teaching across multiple disciplines, weaving science, art and statistical analysis together — helping students see the interconnectedness of our world.”
“We are all delighted to see Dr. LeRoy receive this recognition,” said Evergreen President John Carmichael in a statement. “She epitomizes the caring, mentoring relationships that Evergreen faculty have with students. It’s especially fitting that a student nominated Carri for this honor.”
The awards ceremony can be watched on YouTube.
