At least 9 soldiers from JBLM have died in training exercises since 2011, archives show
Monday’s death of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier was at least the fifth deadly training exercise involving JBLM personnel since 2011, according to The News Tribune’s archives.
U.S. Army Pfc. Joseph A. Marquez, 20, was killed at the Yakima Training Center in a single-vehicle incident, the Army said Tuesday.
Here are other deadly training exercises involving JBLM personnel in the past 11 years:
▪ November 2018, Sgt. Drew Watters dies after being pinned under a Stryker vehicle at JBLM.
▪ April 2018, Pvt. Julian Diaz is killed in a vehicle crash at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California.
▪ September 2015, Capt. James Ahn dies during a parachute exercise near Shelton.
▪ June 2014, Pfc. Andrew Sass is killed during an exercise at the National Training Center.
▪ December 2011, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Frank Buoniconti, Capt. Anne Montgomery, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Shan Joseph Satterfield and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Lucas Daniel Sigfrid die when two Kiowa helicopters collided mid-air southwest of JBLM.
