One person killed in three-car wreck that disrupted U.S. 101 near Shelton Tuesday

A three-car-wreck killed one man, sent four others to the hospital and closed U.S. Highway 101 south of Shelton for several hours Tuesday afternoon.

The collision occurred about 3 p.m. near Lake Boulevard and Cloquallum Road, according to a news release. The incident prompted State Patrol to fully close the roadway and re-route all traffic into downtown Shelton, trooper Chelsea Hodgson said.

First responders found one person dead at the scene: a 43-year-old man from Buckeye, Arizona. Six other people were transported to area hospitals, including four children ages 5, 7, 8 and 10, according to the release.

A description of the incident says three cars were traveling north on U.S. 101 when two of the vehicles stopped for traffic at Cloquallum Road. A Nissan Murano struck one vehicle, which in turn struck the other vehicle, per the release.

The driver of the Nissan that struck the other two, a 56-year-old Shelton woman, was transported to Mason General Hospital with injuries.

Four people were in the vehicle the Shelton woman struck: the Buckeye man, a 40-year-old woman from Seaside, Oregon and the two children.

First responders transported the woman and the 5-year-old to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia but the 7-year-old was sent to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma.

A 60-year-old Shelton man was driving the vehicle that was hit last. He was not injured in the collision.

The WSP news release says the cause of the incident remains under investigation and it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The roadway was fully reopened by 8:40 p.m., according to Hodgson.
